What is Neurofeedback training?                                                                 BrainGain
Neurofeedback training is a type of biofeedback. It is a therapy where you are taught to listen to signals
from your own body (the amount of oxygen rich blood that is delivered to areas of the brain), then react on
this information and learn to control it. Biofeedback may be used to improve health and performance, and
the physiological changes often occur in conjunction with changes to thoughts, emotions and behaviour.
Eventually these changes can be maintained without the use of extra equipment.

At the Health Hub we use Brain Gain’s near infrared spectroscopy neurofeedback to train people to
increase blood flow to the prefrontal areas of the brain. Brain Gain Neurofeedback Therapy gives instant
feedback on the quality and consistency of focused attention on a task.

By training the brain, much as you might train your body in physical exercise, we can help your brain be
more flexible, learn, and function better intellectually and emotionally.

Why is brain blood flow important?

It is simple – the brain requires energy to work and fuel for the brain (oxygen and glucose) is conveyed by
blood. When an area of the brain becomes more active during a task, it requires increased blood supply
because it needs more energy. This increased need for oxygen is met by more oxygen-rich blood being
carried to that part of the brain. Improved blood flow assists in developing healthier neural functioning. Blood
brings needed nutrients and removes toxins so adequate blood flow is required for brain growth and repair.

Prefrontal Cortex:

The prefrontal brain areas play an important role in controlling attention and the rationale for training these
areas is based on this role and also because blood flow to these areas increase when more attention is
The prefrontal cortex is important to:
• focus attention effectively and maintain it on one task,
• control emotions and impulses,
• maintain a sense of purpose,
• respond appropriately to the demands of a specific situation.
Training the prefrontal cortex with neurofeedback therefore exercises attention and the area that controls it.

What does a Neurofeedback training look like?

TESCA (Test for Emotional Stability and Cognitive Ability) is the test which is used as a measurement tool
before starting Brain Gain Neurofeedback Training. This is used to measure an individual’s cognitive
abilities and is used to make comparisons to see where we started and where we ended.
TESCA is unique to Brain Gain and it evaluate the following of each individual:
• Emotional stability
• Variability – referring to neurological impairments
• Response feedback time – measurement of the time that it takes an individual to see
information, to process it and to react to it.
• Impulsivity
• Overall ability to concentrate
• Accuracy
• CDC (Concentration Deviation Coefficient) – indicated to what extent the candidate’s ability to
concentrate deviates from the norm for that specific age group, gender and average

The evaluation is done by the completion of an emotional stability questionnaire and a computerised visual
continuous performance test for the evaluation of attention and impulsivity in children and adults. The client
has a small clicking device in their hand and they react to information that appears on the screen. The test
results are sent electronically for evaluation.

Neurofeedback training course of 15, 24, or 48 sessions can be provided based on the results from the
TESCA test. After completing a course of training, clients are re-tested on the TESCA to evaluate their
response to the training.

How does one do Neurofeedback training?

A person learns to control their attention with the help of a computer that shows them a DVD film. The film
and sounds play when they pay close attention, and stops when their attention decreases below a certain
level. By doing this, they learn to control the film and their attention. The goal is to make the film play for
longer periods of time and this is a gradual learning process. This is the essence of neurofeedback training.
During the training sessions a headband is worn on the forehead and this collects the brain blood flow
neurofeedback information.

Use of Brain Gain Neurofeedback Training:

Many studies indicate the presence of abnormal cerebral blood flow in disorders such as Alzheimer’s,
ADD, addiction, depression, dementia and autism. Increased blood flow = increased glucose and oxygen
in specific areas of the brain, which assists in developing healthier neural functioning. As the prefrontal
brain areas play a vital role in controlling attention, we see that this therapy trains individuals to refocus
their attention which increases blood flow to these areas when more attention is required. This builds the
attentive capacity of the brain for better control and less attention fatigue.
At the Health Hub we work directly with the brain to improve:
• Working Memory
• Fast Thinking
• Academic Results
• Peak performance

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long does a Brain Gain session last?

A typical treatment session lasts about 20-45 minutes.

How many Brain Gain sessions are necessary?

The typical patient usually requires between 15-48 session. A recommendation regarding the number of
training sessions will be made based on the results from the TESCA test.
Is the change permanent?

The changes are permanent. Once the clients brain learns the how and when, that ability becomes
embedded in the permanent circuit within the brain, the formation of this new circuitry is referred to as
Neuroplasticity and is the theoretical basis for how we learn. If an additional stress is introduced later in
life, a booster session or two may be required.

Are there any published studies demonstrating the efficacy of this treatment?

For the past 30 years, multiple research centres around the world have demonstrated the effectiveness of
this therapy for several types of neurologically based difficulties. Neurofeedback HEG has been proven to
provide natural relief for conditions such as ADD/ADHD, migraine, Tension Headaches, Chronic Pain,
Memory Loss, and Insomnia. There are numerous published medical studies which you can download.

Will it work for me or my child?

Neurofeedback has been shown to have positive effects in many areas.
• Sleep problems
• Stress
• Attention problems
• Anxiety
• Signs of depression
• Pain
The brain is always working with every other key system in our bodies – our immune system, endocrine
system, cardiac system, digestive system – so if we positively change part of this interconnected brainbody
network, we’re likely to start healthy changes throughout the whole thing.

When will I start to notice changes from the Neurofeedback training?

Often clients report significant changes in the first 2-3 sessions. However, that’s not always the case.
Often it can take longer than 10 sessions to note any signs of change. It also depends on the kind of
improvements being tracked.
If you take someone to the gym, how long will it take for that person to get into shape?
How Long before they notice a change. The answer varies widely. Neurofeedback is brain exercise. How
long it takes for the brain to become better regulated can vary widely.

What changes are you likely to notice first?

Changes can be very subtle, particularly initially. Changes could include:
• Better sleeping patterns
• Increased calm and reduced anxiety
• Higher sense of alertness
Some people may start to notice changes in mood, attention, anger, or pain relatively quickly – within 5-10
sessions. For others, it could take more time.
When brain damage or neurological issues are evident, it can take longer for a candidate to respond, no
matter what the symptoms are.
